Abstract

Gaucho cartoonist Renato Vinicius Canini participated of artistic movements and publications of comics and graphic humor of great importance, both for the Brazilian publishing market and the alternative comics scene. His artistic career and life can be traced through his work, from his activities in the cooperative of artists who supported Brazilian comics in the early 1960s, through the renewal of the character Joe Carioca, whose misadventures take place in Rio de Janeiro’s slum hills, and comic-strips with ecological content. The use of metalanguage in the humoristic stories which he produced for various titles is a recurrent characteristic of the artist. To bring back the memory of this little-known comics author, we conducted a qualitative research based on documentary research and analysis of the contents of the material he created during his career.
