Samba and afro-brazilian religiosity in the films of Nelson Pereira dos Santos
Abstract
This article tries to elaborate the thematic recurrence of samba and afro-brazilian religiosity in the characters representation of Brazilian director Nelson Pereira dos Santos. First of all, we try to to put such sociocultural elements and their transversal nature in the director’s filmography into context. In the sequence, we present an political-affective analysis of the main characters of the films Rio, Zona Norte (1957) and Boca de Ouro (1962), regarding their first plan framing in such works. This way, we investigate how music and religion surround these characters’ resilience and emancipation regarding the social-political state of affairs in which they find themselves through filmic narrative. Therefore, we use as theoretical-methodological approach Badiou’s (2004) reflection on the film character and the first plan framing under the view of Kracauer (2001) and Deleuze (1985).
