Abstract

On November 19, 2020, on the eve of the Black Consciousness Day celebrations in Brazil, João Alberto Freitas was attacked and killed on the premises of the Carrefour supermarket in Porto Alegre, RS. The death of a black Brazilian sparked a wave of protests on the streets around the world, gaining prominence in main news programs all over the country. On the screen, the news ratified the speeches on the street, especially those that pointed to a racial crime. Based on this scenario, the objective of this paper is to analyze the coverage carried out by Jornal Nacional (Rede Globo), seeking evidence, in the light of the Audiovisual Materiality Analysis, that will enable us to affirm to what extent television news fulfilled its function of not only reporting a supposed crime motivated by racial issues, but to propose ways for an effective knowledge related to Human Rights.
