Cartografia da violência na construção narrativa de “regiões perigosas”: um processo de estigmatização reforçado por noticiários criminais

Abstract

This paper aims to reflect on how journalism reinforces the stigmatization of dangerous regions and, consequently, the people who inhabit them. The study proposes a dialogue based on the homicide rate, representations of violence in criminal news and the perceptions of viewers who live in the geographical area most stigmatized by these programs. The empirical object is formed from a content analysis of 80 editions of Balanço Geral and Tribuna da Massa and from in-depth interviews with six television viewers living in the Cidade Industrial de Curitiba. Although the two TV news stigmatize the region as violent, the participants associate the notion of danger with other places. This attitude reinforces the geographical territory both as a stigmatizing device and as a relevant community of reference for the production of meanings.
