Abstract

This article analyzes practices of commerce, consumption and sociability in Lavradio Street, in the center of the city of Rio de Janeiro, which stands out due to the presence of many antiquarian stores. Based on an ethnographic research, the study emphasizes the anthropological perspective of consumption and, therefore, reinforces aspects of collective language, communication and social classification that take place in that street. Lavradio Street represents a case in which the name of the street gives a positive symbology to the local establishments So that traditional location, by itself, already represents a kind of guarantee or certification. In other words, the street is a factor of recognition of quality a priori. Being in that street works as a credential to these antiquarians.
