Use of virtual reality and augmented reality as a teaching resource in medical education

Abstract

The concept of medical education has developed in the last decades. The study aimed to understand the current situation of medical teaching regarding the use of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) in medical courses in Curitiba/PR, using the subject of anatomy as the basis of analysis. This is an exploratory descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, involving anatomy teachers from medical schools. It was carried out in three stages: situational diagnosis, intervention with VR/AR and post-intervention teachers' perception. Most teachers use anatomical pieces and dissection techniques (78.6%) and 46% are unaware of AR and VR. Negative points include the cost of technology (53.6%), insecurity (50%) and teacher discomfort (43%). The positive points were the interest of students and the ease of administering the content. The acceptance of these technologies was greater in private institutions and for teachers with less training and teaching time. Most teachers consider the use of AR/VR possible. New research in this area is necessary to facilitate the dissemination and implementation of AR and VR in medical teaching institutions in the country
