A SEA OF (RE)EXISTENCE: THE ART OF/IN LGBTQIA+ BODIES WITH DISABILITIES IN A LIFE STORY
Abstract
The bodies of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual and other (LGBTQIA+) people with disabilities are constituted as of a group that has been historically marginalized and silenced, but who resist and fight together with social movements against hegemonic thinking and in favor of the re-signification of identities, be they of race, gender, class or sexual orientation, giving voice and visibility to subjects that are considered as minority groups. Research on people with disabilities in the LGBTQIA+ community is recent, and there is a scarcity of specific productions involving LGBTQIA+ people with disabilities in art. Thus, this study aims to reflect on the life trajectory of an LGBTQIA+ person with disabilities, searching, in her memories, to identify the elements of silencing, resistance, and life transformation through art. This is a work that uses Oral History in the oral history of life modality, grounded in feminist studies (decolonial and intersectional). Participated in the research a disabled LGBTQIA+ adult male actor who is 29 years old and frequented the formal school system and theater schools in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is concluded from his life story that the arts enabled self-knowledge, the discovery of sexuality, safety, strengthening of his identities, and confrontation of structural and cultural capacitism. On the other side, it was verified that there was silence for being a disabled gay body. Finally, it is emphasized that Alcides' life trajectory signals the need to problematize the role of Art in the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ disabled bodies in society.
