Social support perception and serving a restrictive liberty sentence

Keywords: social support, person deprived of liberty, mental health

Abstract

Social support is vital for people deprived of their liberty. During the sentence, this support acts as a connection between the outside world and the prison environment, providing support, balance and mental health. It is important how these individuals receive and interpret social support during incarceration. The study sought to understand the perceptions about the needs and ways in which inmates demonstrate social support, in the dimensions of family, friends and significant others. Five male participants under restriction of liberty were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed and subjected to content analysis. The common categories for support from family and friends were the importance of visits, the expectation of receiving support upon release and the fear of being forgotten. In the context of friendships and other significant others, support emerged in the form of exchanging letters. One category, present in family and significant others, indicated resignation about the lack of social support ("no expectation of support"). The research highlighted how people deprived of liberty represent the social support received in the context in which they live, recognizing these interactions as essential for maintaining mental health and well-being, reinforcing the need for policies that coordinate these interactions.
